91st Academy Awards

The best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards was Mexico’s “Roma” directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

The five nominated films for the Foreign Language Film category for the 91st Academy Awards in 2019 were:

• “Capernaum” Lebanon
• “Cold War” Poland
• “Never Look Away” Germany
• “Roma” Mexico
• “Shoplifters” Japan

The other four films shortlisted for the Foreign Language Film category for the 91st Academy Awards in 2019 were:

• Colombia, “Birds of Passage,” Cristina Gallego, Ciro Guerra, directors;
• Denmark, “The Guilty,” Gustav Möller, director;
• Kazakhstan, “Ayka,” Sergey Dvortsevoy, director;
• South Korea, “Burning,” Lee Chang-dong, director;

This was the second nomination for Lebanon; the eleventh for Poland and Germany; the ninth for Mexico; and the 13th for Japan.

With ten nominations overall, “Roma” tied the record held by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) for the most nominations received by a foreign language film. It is the 10th foreign language film to be nominated for best picture and foreign language in the same year. Just like the previous four, “Roma”won the best foreign language category.

87 countries submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 91st Academy Awards.
